Machine Knitting at NEPHRA!

Hello everyone

Just to let you know that NEPHRA are teaming up with Sheffield born artist and videosmith, Sam Meech, to explore machine knitting.

Sam and your regular community ICT tutor and machine knitter, Iris Cooper – will be running 10 x 3 hour sessions starting Thursday 10th October 2.00pm to 5.00pm. Anyone with an interest in machine knitting is invited to come along. Perhaps you are thinking of returning to machine knitting after a long absence, or maybe you would simply like to have a go on a knitting machine? If so, the sessions are open to all ages and aim not only to cover the basics but give you the confidence to move forward with the craft.

They’ll also be looking at ways in which machine knitted fabrics can be used. Bringing machine knitting into the 21st century, Sam and Iris will demonstrate how they have breathed new life into an old electronic knitting machine, enabling it to ‘talk’ to a modern computer and produce knitted digital images like the ones below:

For those without machines there will be a small selection set up for use during the sessions, but if you wish to bring your own, please call Bren on 07745 502 526 to reserve your space. Sessions will take place at NEPHRA HQ, 27 Parkfield Road North, New Moston, Manchester, M40 3TB.

Next Week is Blood Donation Week!

Love Manchester is working with the NHS to increase the number of people in Manchester giving potentially lifesaving blood. Hospitals across England and North Wales need around 7,000 units of blood every day to help people with cancer, in A&E and in maternity units. If you’re in generally good health, Blood Donation Week is an ideal time to make a date to donate.
Go to the external site www.blood.co.uk(external website) or call 0300 123 23 23.
Centres are at Norfolk House in the city centre and Plymouth Grove, Longsight.

Fun with Slideshows

Hello there

The Friday afternoon computer class is continuing to enjoy making slideshows using Photo Story 3. As well as the films they have already posted to this Blog, some of class are now using the software to make their personal shows. With that in mind, I’d like to mention a handy little utility program that’s called Tweak PS. As you know, when you create a slideshow using Photo Story 3, the software automatically adds movement to each and every slide (apart from the ones that have captions included), and although some motion in a slideshow is desirable, having it on every slide can be quite tiring on the viewer’s eyes.

This is where Tweak PS comes into its own. In short, it will allow you to remove all the motion from any given Photo Story project file. It will also let you set an overall slide time i.e. change it from the default slide duration of 5 seconds, and you can even randomise the order of the slides themselves.  The program is quick to install and very easy to use… and you are left with a great starting point from which to move forward and create your own unique style of show.

Here’s a handy link to the download page:

Have fun!
